There are things we all need and effectively love without thinking about them in those terms, things that make life palatable and even possible. Food, clothing, shelter, healthcare and education are among those things, and so is water.
One of the things that makes Michigan easy to love is our proximity to the Great Lakes - the world’s largest supply of fresh water. But there’s an irony to our closeness to the lakes. While some of us are fortunate enough to go through the day using as much water as we need without thinking about what it costs, many Michiganders, from Ironwood to Detroit, from the Soo to Benton Harbor, have a hard time affording the basics, including water.
People often suffer in silence and shame as they shower at a neighbor’s, haul water to cook or flush the toilet, and live in fear of having their children taken from them adding mightily to their struggle to be a family. That’s why groups like the Water Equals Life (WEL) Coalition are working to make water truly affordable for all, regardless of income.
Every community in Michigan will benefit when we work to make life-giving water affordable for every family and individual. When our state becomes more livable for all, with more stable families and households, I dare say it will become even more lovable.
Valentine’s Day is set aside to show love for those close to you. Consider spreading love to folks you’ve never met and who may never know of your support. The Water Equals Life (WEL) Coalition is building a statewide network of support for water so that every family in the Great Lakes State can afford it, and your contribution to WEL will help us keep water flowing. It’s a big job doing serious, effective outreach on both peninsulas, and we could use your help.
Pop over to the WEL Coalition website and take the pledge to help keep water flowing to your fellow residents (if you haven’t already). And please, chip in what you can to the campaign to make sure that everyone has access to safe, affordable water in every tap. We are truly grateful for your support.
