There's a common myth that once our lawmakers are elected, they become unreachable—but remember, they are voted into office by their constituents. It's their job to listen to you.

Even so, the process can feel daunting. How do you reach a legislator? What do you say? Will it matter? We're tackling those questions and breaking down the process.

Taking Action Works

Every Michigander has a state representative and a state senator who vote on policy. Lawmakers track calls, emails, and social media posts from their constituents. You might feel like just one voice, but when enough people demand action, it becomes impossible to ignore. Even a handful of messages can shift a vote.

How to Take Action (It's Easier Than You Think!)

This Earth Day, join us in fighting for real water affordability—not temporary fixes. Here’s how:

  • Find your legislators.

  • Craft a message.

    • Keep it simple! For example: My name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your City]. I urge you to prioritize water affordability and infrastructure solutions in our state. Access to water is a basic human need, and Michigan families deserve action now."

  • Choose how to contact them:

    • Call: Offices track calls as "for" or "against" an issue.

    • Email: Creates a written record of your stance.

    • Social media: Public pressure works! Tag them to amplify your voice.

*Pro tip: Use our TOOLKIT for templates to make contacting lawmakers easy!

Your EARTH DAY CHALLENGE: Speak Up for Water!

You don't have to be an expert. Take five minutes today and speak up for water justice.

  • Call your rep and let them know you support true water affordability.

  • Send an email directly to your legislator. You can use our toolkit for messages or add your own personal story.

  • Share why water affordability matters to you on social media and tag your legislator.

Why It Matters

Water policy isn’t abstract—it’s about rural residents in Oscoda drinking contaminated water, TCE in Mancelona, and toxic algae in Saginaw Bay, Flint families still fighting for justice, Detroiters facing shutoffs, and communities burdened by rising costs and pollution.

We’ve seen change happen when we speak up—like when public pressure helped remove PFAS from drinking water. But the fight isn’t over. Failing infrastructure, unaffordable bills, and corporate pollution threaten our water every day.

Together, we can ensure every tap in Michigan flows with safe, affordable water. No exceptions!
